Poly diploma vs JC then uni, which path did you actually find more worth it?

My kid just got their O-level results and is torn between JC and polytechnic. Family opinions are divided, the older generation swears by JC and uni, but the poly route seems more practical and hands-on. For those who've been through either, what's your honest reflection years later?

I did poly then went on to a local uni, so I've seen both worlds. Honest reflection: poly gave me practical skills and industry exposure that JC students simply didn't have, I did internships, real projects, and entered uni already knowing my field. The old myth that poly is a lesser path is outdated, plenty of poly grads reach uni and do very well. That said, poly suits kids who already have some idea of their interest and prefer hands-on learning over pure theory. If your kid is still exploring and academically strong across subjects, JC keeps options broad. There's no wrong choice, it depends on your child's learning style and clarity of direction. Both can lead to uni and good careers.

I took the JC route and went to uni, and while it worked out, I'll be honest that JC was academically intense and not everyone thrives in that pressure-cooker environment. For me the broad A-level foundation helped when I was unsure of my direction. But I've seen friends who forced themselves into JC because of family pressure and struggled badly, when they'd have flourished in poly. My real advice to you as a parent: let your kid choose based on how they learn and what motivates them, not on outdated prestige ideas. A happy motivated poly student beats a miserable struggling JC one. The destination matters less than the fit. Support whichever path suits your child's actual strengths and interests.
