Should I transfer my CPF OA to SA for the higher interest?

I'm 32 and read that moving OA (2.5%) to SA (4%) earns more for retirement. But it's irreversible and I might need OA for a flat. Is this a smart move or am I locking away money I'll regret?

The OA-to-SA transfer is genuinely powerful because of compounding, but the word "irreversible" is doing a lot of work in your question. Rule I follow: never transfer OA you might need for property, because once it's in SA it can only be used for retirement, not your flat downpayment or monthly loan. At 32 if you haven't bought your home yet, keep enough OA for that first. If you already own and your housing is settled, then transferring the excess makes strong sense, the extra 1.5% compounding over 25+ years is a lot. Also look at whether topping up via cash for tax relief suits you better since that money is fresh, not locked OA you needed. Do the math on your actual housing plans first, this decision is very personal.

I did it but only after I'd fully paid concerns for my flat. Regret nothing, my SA is snowballing nicely toward FRS. But my colleague transferred then couldn't use it for his BTO downpayment and had to fork out more cash. Sequence matters: property first, then transfer excess.

Remember using OA for housing means you owe accrued interest back to CPF when you sell. Some people transfer to SA to force themselves to stop dipping into OA for property so their retirement stays intact. Depends if you see your flat as an asset or a home you'll never sell.
