Is tuition really necessary for PSLE or is it just kiasu culture?

My P5 kid is doing ok in school but everyone around us is piling on tuition. I don't want to waste money or stress him out, but I'm scared of him falling behind. How do I decide?

Parent of two who went through PSLE, tuition is a tool, not a requirement. Diagnose before you spend. Look at his actual weak spots from school results and papers: is there a specific subject or topic where he genuinely doesn't get it, or is he generally fine and you're just anxious because the neighbours are all doing it? If he's coping, blanket tuition can actually backfire, overloading kills motivation and eats the playtime that keeps them sane at that age. What worked for us: targeted help only. My older one needed help with Chinese composition so we did one focused class, everything else we supported at home with past-year papers. My younger did zero tuition and did well. Also the new PSLE scoring (AL bands) rewards consistency over chasing the last mark. Protect his sleep and interest, a burnt-out P6 kid performs worse.

If you do go for tuition, quality over quantity. A good tutor who explains why he's making mistakes beats three centres of drilling. And please still let him play and sleep, tired kids don't retain anything. The AL system doesn't reward you for chasing perfection.

Kiasu culture is real and it's a money pit lah. My kid did one subject of tuition for a genuine weakness and we did the rest with free MOE resources and past papers at home. Scored well and still had a childhood. Don't tuition just because the WhatsApp parent group is panicking.
