Is PSLE tuition really necessary or are we just following the herd?

My P4 kid is doing okay in school but every other parent has enrolled their child in 3-4 tuition classes. I feel pressured but also don't want to burn out my child or my wallet. Did tuition actually make a difference for your kids?

Two kids through PSLE, opposite experiences taught me this: tuition is a tool, not a default. My elder was coping fine in school so we skipped most tuition, just added targeted help for the one weak subject (his math) in P5. He did great and had a childhood. My younger genuinely struggled with the concepts and benefited from a small-group tutor who explained things differently than her teacher. Lessons: 1) Don't enrol in 4 subjects reflexively, diagnose which subject actually needs help using his school test breakdowns. 2) If he's doing okay, targeted help for one weak area beats blanket tuition. 3) Watch for burnout, a stressed, tired child performs worse, not better. 4) The kiasu herd will make you doubt yourself constantly, tune it out. The AL scoring rewards consistency across subjects, so shore up weaknesses rather than over-drilling strengths. Save the money and your child's wellbeing where tuition adds nothing.

Honestly a lot of it is parental anxiety outsourced to tutors. What moved the needle most for us was NOT more classes but fixing study habits: consistent revision, doing past-year papers under timed conditions, and going through mistakes properly. You can do a lot of that at home for free if you have the time and patience. Tuition sometimes just becomes expensive supervised homework. Try structured self-practice first before spending.

Depends on the kid AND on you. Some parents genuinely can't coach their own child (either no time, or it turns into daily screaming matches, been there). In that case a patient tutor preserves your relationship with your child, which is worth it. But 3-4 subjects for a kid already doing fine is overkill and risks killing his love of learning. One or two max, targeted. Quality over quantity lah.
