New colleague keeps taking credit for my work in meetings

A colleague who joined recently keeps presenting my ideas as his own in front of the boss. I don't want to look petty but it's affecting how my contributions are seen. How do you handle office politics like this without becoming the villain?

I had a colleague like this and I dealt with it by talking to him privately first. I said something neutral like 'I noticed the idea I shared came up as yours in the meeting, let's make sure we credit each other properly.' Sometimes people don't even realise they're doing it. If he continues after that, then you have grounds to loop in your manager because you already gave him a chance. Frame it to your boss as wanting clarity on ownership for accountability, not as a complaint. Also, volunteer to be the one who sends the meeting follow-up notes, so you naturally control the record of who contributed what. Protect your work but keep the workplace peace where you can.

From my experience, the fix is documentation and quiet visibility, not confrontation. Start putting your ideas in writing before meetings: a short email to the team or a note in the shared channel with your name and date. That way there's a timestamp of who thought of it. In meetings, speak up early and say 'building on what I proposed earlier'. If he grabs credit, you can gently add 'yes, glad my suggestion landed well' without attacking him. I also made sure my manager saw my work directly through one-on-one updates. People notice patterns over time. Stay professional and let the paper trail do the arguing. Getting emotional in front of the boss usually backfires on you, not him.
