Infant care centre or leave baby with grandparents? Torn about the decision
Maternity leave is ending and we can't decide, put our baby in an infant care centre or have my in-laws look after her. Centre is structured but pricey and germs, grandparents are free and loving but I worry about differing methods and their energy. How did you decide?

Went through this exact debate. We chose grandparents for the first year then infant care after, and honestly a hybrid worked best for us. What tipped it: the subsidies. Infant care with the basic and additional subsidies is far cheaper than the sticker, so cost was less of a barrier than we feared, check your eligibility, it surprised us. The real trade-offs: centres give structure, socialisation and trained caregivers, but yes, the first months are a parade of runny noses as their immunity builds. Grandparents give love and continuity and it's free, but consider their stamina honestly, caring for an infant all day is exhausting at their age, and the methods clash, sleep training, screen time, feeding, can strain the family if you don't align expectations early. My advice: whatever you pick, have the hard conversations upfront about your non-negotiables, and don't guilt yourself, a happy, functioning parent matters more than the perfect arrangement. Both paths raise wonderful kids.
We used grandparents and the biggest issue wasn't the baby, it was managing the relationship. Different generation, different rules, and I learned to pick my battles, safety and feeding I held firm, minor stuff I let go. Also we quietly paid them and covered all baby costs so it never felt like we were exploiting free labour. If you go this route, protect the family harmony deliberately.

Consider your child's temperament and your work reality too. A centre with fixed hours can clash with unpredictable work, whereas grandparents flex. But a centre never calls in sick or gets tired. We valued the structure and early socialisation, our kid adapted fast after the initial sick phase. There's no universally right answer, only the one that fits your family's logistics and values.
