Switching careers into tech at 33, too late? Real Singapore experiences?

Currently in a dead-end admin role, 33 this year, thinking of reskilling into tech (data or software). Is it realistic here or am I dreaming? Would love to hear from people who actually did it.

Switched from a logistics admin role into data analytics at 34, so not dreaming, but let me be real about how. First, not too late, but you must be strategic because you are competing with fresh grads and career-switchers alike. What worked: I picked ONE lane (data analytics, not vague tech), did a recognised course, the government-supported conversion programmes like the TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) Career Conversion Programmes are gold because they include on-the-job training and employers who are specifically willing to hire switchers. That is the key, you want a pathway that ends in a job, not just a cert. Second, I built a small portfolio of real projects (even using my old company's data) to show I can apply skills, because a switcher with a portfolio beats one with only a certificate. Third, be willing to take a slight pay dip or a junior-ish title for the first role, then climb fast once you have industry experience. Within two years I was back above my old pay. Age was never the blocker, lack of demonstrable skill is. Commit fully, use the government programmes, and you can do it.

Look into the Career Conversion Programmes (CCP) under Workforce Singapore. They are designed exactly for mid-career switchers, subsidised, and place you with a hiring employer who trains you on the job. That is far better than doing a random bootcamp and hoping. My friend switched into software via a CCP at 36 and is now fully employed as a developer. The structured pathway derisks it.

Your admin experience is not wasted, it can be a bridge. Roles like business analyst, product operations, or data roles within your current industry value domain knowledge PLUS new tech skills. You don't have to become a pure hardcore coder. I moved into a hybrid role using my old sector knowledge and it made me more valuable than a fresh grad with no context. Play to your strengths.

Be honest with yourself about whether you enjoy the actual work, not just the salary hype. Tech has cooled and it is competitive now. Try free resources first, build a small project, and see if you can stand debugging for hours. If you still enjoy it, then invest properly. Many people chase tech for money and burn out because they don't like the work itself.
