How much ang bao to give for a wedding in 2026? Dont want to underpay

Invited to a few weddings this year, some at hotels some at restaurants. Always stressed about the right ang bao amount so I dont look cheap but also cannot overspend. How do you all decide the amount?

The unspoken rule: your ang bao should roughly cover your seat's cost (so the couple doesn't 'lose money' on you), scaled by venue and your closeness. Practical guide I use: 1) check the venue, hotel > restaurant > void deck in expected amount, because per-head cost differs, 2) there are updated ang bao 'market rate' guides published each year (banks and wedding sites release them by hotel/venue), google the current year's rate for that specific hotel, 3) adjust up if you're close (good friend, colleague you like) or bringing a plus-one (pay for two seats), 4) weekend/peak dates cost the couple more, so slightly higher. Rough logic: match the per-pax cost + a bit more if close. Don't stress too much, closeness and showing up matters more than the exact figure, but yes, covering your seat is the baseline courtesy.

Weekday versus weekend and lunch versus dinner also shift the amount, because they shift what the couple is paying per head, a Saturday dinner at a hotel is peak pricing and sits at the top of the range, while a weekday lunch is noticeably cheaper for them and so a lower ang bao is perfectly fine. When you're genuinely unsure, round up slightly rather than down, because the small awkwardness and lingering feeling of having underpaid a friend isn't worth the few dollars you'd save, and the couple does quietly notice suspiciously thin packets. That said, don't over-stress the exact figure, close friends really don't sit there tabulating who gave what, they're just happy you came. Match the venue and timing, nudge up for closeness, and relax.

Base it on covering your seat's cost, that single principle is the whole logic behind ang bao and once you internalise it the rest is easy. A hotel seat costs the couple more than a restaurant seat, which costs more than a void deck seat, so you give correspondingly more for a hotel do, less for a simpler venue, you're essentially not wanting the couple to lose money hosting you. Bringing your partner or a plus-one? Then you're occupying two seats, so pay for two. If you happen to be genuinely broke and it's a distant acquaintance, give what you can with a sincere heart, because showing up and celebrating them still counts for a lot, real friends understand circumstances. Cover your seat as the baseline, adjust for closeness, done.

I literally google 'wedding ang bao rate' plus the year every single time, because the banks and wedding portals publish detailed tables broken down by specific hotel and venue, and they're updated annually to reflect current banquet prices. It's genuinely super handy, you find the exact venue on your invite and it tells you the going rate to cover a seat there, which takes all the guesswork and anxiety out of it. Then I just adjust from that baseline, a bit more if we're close friends, standard if it's a colleague or acquaintance. Bookmark one of those rate guides for the year and you'll never stress about this again, it turns a fuzzy social minefield into a quick lookup. The tables exist precisely because everyone has your exact worry.
