Friend showing signs of depression, how do I actually help without making it worse?

My close friend has withdrawn, stopped replying, says he is fine but clearly not. I want to help but scared of saying the wrong thing or pushing him away. What actually works? Not a professional myself.

Helped a friend through this, and the biggest thing I learned: you don't need to fix it, you need to stay. What worked: 1) show up consistently without pressure, 'no need to reply, just letting you know I'm around' texts, 2) invite to low-key normal things (kopi, walk) not heavy 'we need to talk' sessions, 3) listen without jumping to advice or 'think positive', just 'that sounds really hard', 4) gently encourage professional help and offer to go with him to the GP or help him call a helpline, 5) look after yourself too, you can't pour from empty. If he ever mentions self-harm or you're worried he's in danger, treat it seriously and contact SOS (1767) or the National Care Hotline (1771) right away. I'm not a professional, please lean on official resources for the serious stuff.

Just keep showing up, that's genuinely the most powerful thing you can do and it costs you almost nothing. My friend told me much later that the 'no need to reply, just thinking of you' texts were the thing that kept him tethered even during the weeks he ghosted absolutely everyone, because they said 'you matter to me' without demanding energy he didn't have. So don't take the silence personally and don't disappear when he goes quiet, that's exactly when withdrawing people decide they're a burden and everyone's given up. Consistency beats intensity every time, a steady low-key presence over months does more than one dramatic heart-to-heart. Keep the door open, keep it pressure-free, and just keep gently knocking.

Don't try to be his therapist, I made exactly that mistake, took on the weight of trying to counsel and 'save' my friend, and I burned myself out badly while not actually helping him the way a trained professional could. Your job isn't to diagnose or treat, it's to be the friend who brings him teh, sits with him, and stays human and normal with him. Then gently and repeatedly nudge him toward real professional help, a GP, a counsellor, a helpline. The single most useful concrete thing I did was offer to physically go with him to the polyclinic and sit in the waiting room, because that first step is terrifying and paralysing to take alone. Lower the barrier to getting real help, don't try to be the help.
