MNC vs local SME for career growth in your 30s?

Got two offers: a big MNC (structured but slow promotion, must wait your turn) versus a local SME where I'd be second-in-charge immediately. Same pay roughly. Which builds a better career long term?

I've done both. MNC gives you a brand name that opens doors forever, plus proper processes you can learn and carry anywhere. SME gives you range because you wear ten hats, but if the boss is a one-man-show you might just be his glorified assistant with a title. Ask the SME directly: what's the decision-making autonomy, and does the owner actually delegate. I joined an SME as "2IC" and realised the towkay signed off on every $50 claim. Left in a year. If the SME founder is genuinely stepping back, that role is gold for your 30s. If not, take the MNC brand and use it as a launchpad.

MNC all the way if you ever plan to move regionally or overseas. The name on your CV carries weight in interviews across SEA. SME experience is harder for the next recruiter to benchmark because they don't know the company. That said, if the SME is in a hot sector and you get equity or profit share, that changes the math completely.

Slow promotion in MNC is real but so is job security. In this retrenchment climate, SMEs fold or restructure faster and there's no severance framework beyond the minimum. I got retrenched from an SME with exactly the statutory notice and nothing else. MNC I know paid 1 month per year of service. Factor in the downside, not just the upside title.
