Got my ICT notification but it lands on a critical project launch at work. My manager is not happy. Can I defer? What are my obligations and what can my employer legally do or not do? Stressed.

Deferment specifically for work reasons is genuinely hard to get, and I don't want you to pin your hopes on it, because business inconvenience, even a big project launch, rarely qualifies as a strong enough ground, the whole system is built around the expectation that operational readiness comes ahead of employer convenience. I tried applying once for a work clash and got rejected. So by all means apply early through the official channel if your circumstances are genuinely exceptional and well-supported, but honestly plan your project handover assuming you ARE going, prep your colleagues, document where things stand, brief whoever covers for you. Banking on a deferment that probably won't come is how people end up scrambling. Assume ICT happens, make yourself replaceable for those weeks, and treat any approved deferment as a bonus, not the plan.

Your employer legally cannot punish you for serving ICT, full stop, that's the bottom line to hold onto while you're stressed, NS obligations are legally protected and it is an offence for an employer to dismiss, threaten, or disadvantage you for fulfilling them. So while your manager is allowed to be unhappy and grumble, they cannot actually take it out on your job, your appraisal, or your standing, and if they explicitly threaten your employment over an ICT you're required by law to attend, that's a serious matter you can report through the proper channels. Mine also grumbled and made me feel guilty, but they knew full well they couldn't do anything about it. So serve your ICT, hand over your project responsibilities cleanly before you go, and come back, the law is squarely on your side here.
