What's it really like going through NS BMT as someone who was super unfit before enlistment?
I'm the classic sedentary kid, IPPT preliminary I failed everything. Enlisting into Tekong soon and quite scared sia. For those who came in unfit, how bad was it really and did you survive the SOC and route marches?

I enlisted at 78kg overweight, went into the Physical Training Phase (PTP) first for the extra two months before BMT proper. Honestly that PTP saved my life, by the time I joined the normal batch I could already do the 2.4km under 13 min. The sergeants push you but they're not out to kill you, just don't fall out and don't act smart, and you'll clear it. I passed out at 68kg with a silver IPPT, first medal in my life lah.

SOC low wall was my nightmare at first because I'm short and got no upper body strength. Ask your section mates to spot you and practise the technique, it's really more skill than pure muscle. By POP I could clear it clean, so got hope one.

Field camp with the outfield rations and no shower for days is the part nobody warns you about properly. But weirdly that's the part I look back on most fondly, sitting in the shell scrape at 3am on sentry duty talking cock with your buddy. NS liao you'll miss it, trust me.

Don't be the guy who keeps chao keng and books in to the medical centre for every small thing. The whole platoon remembers who carried and who disappeared during field camp. Better to try and fail than to keng, the buddies respect effort.

Route march is more mental than physical honestly. The 24km one my feet were shredded but everyone around you is suffering the same, so you just tekan through together. Buy proper insoles and change your socks, blister is the real enemy not the distance.
