Is SkillsFuture Credit actually worth using for a career switch at 35?

Thinking of moving from admin to something tech-ish. Everyone says use SkillsFuture but the courses I see are short and I doubt a cert alone gets me hired. Anyone actually switched careers using it?

Used the credit for a foundational course, then did a longer subsidised programme (check the ones under the mid-career pathways). The cert got me interviews, but the portfolio project I built afterwards got me the job. Steps: 1) pick a target role and read 10 real job ads, 2) list the skills they repeat, 3) find a course that maps to those, 4) build one real project to show. Treat the credit as fuel, not the whole engine. Also check your top-ups, mid-career folks got extra credit topped up before.

The generic off-the-shelf courses are too shallow to move the needle, you finish and realise you learned surface-level stuff any YouTube playlist covers for free. If you're serious about switching, the credit covers maybe 10 percent of a proper reskilling journey, the rest is self-driven projects, networking, and possibly a longer paid course. Go in with a concrete plan and target role or you'll just collect certificates nobody in hiring actually cares about. The credit isn't the problem, using it aimlessly is. Map it to a specific in-demand skill and a portfolio outcome, otherwise skip it.

Yes worth it but manage your expectations hard. I used mine for a UX course and it did NOT magically switch me overnight, it took about a year of side projects and free redesigns for small businesses to build a portfolio anyone would look at. What the subsidy actually did was lower my financial risk to even try the field before committing, and that de-risking was worth it because I confirmed I liked UX before quitting my stable job. If you go in expecting a cert to open doors by itself you'll be disappointed. Go in expecting it to fund your exploration, and it's genuinely useful.

Honestly for a pure career switch, look beyond the small credit at the bigger subsidised conversion programmes, there are structured mid-career schemes that include actual traineeships with an employer, which is worlds better than a standalone course for getting hired. The credit is really more for topping up a specific skill gap, not carrying a whole transition. My colleague went through a place-and-train type programme and landed a real role because it came with an employer attachment. Check what's currently on the SkillsFuture site because the schemes and eligibility keep changing, and the programme names differ year to year. Aim for one with a job attachment.
