Best way to do a JB weekend trip without the crazy causeway jams?

We used to pop over to Johor Bahru often for food, groceries and massages but the causeway jams have gotten insane, sometimes hours stuck. For those still doing regular JB trips, how do you time it or which route works to avoid wasting half the day at the checkpoint?

After years of JB trips, my strategy is go on weekdays if you possibly can, the difference versus weekends is night and day. I also cleared and set up all my e-payment and VEP stuff in advance so I'm not caught out at the checkpoint. For crossing, having your documents and app-based clearance ready speeds things up a lot. Another tip, I sometimes park on the Singapore side and take public transport across when the car queue looks hopeless. Manage expectations though, during peak seasons the jam is unavoidable no matter what, so I just accept it and bring snacks and good music. If you can be flexible with timing, JB is still totally worth it. Just never, ever go on the eve of a long weekend, that's asking for a four-hour ordeal.

Regular JB-goer here. My timing rule: go super early, like leave home before dawn on a weekend, cross before the crowd wakes up, and come back either early afternoon before the return surge or late night. The killer jams are mid-morning going in and evening coming back on weekends and eve of public holidays, avoid those windows like the plague. Taking the bus or motorbike can be faster than a car at peak because of dedicated lanes. Also the Woodlands versus Tuas checkpoint choice matters depending on where in JB you're headed, Tuas is often less jammed for certain areas. Check live traffic before you go. Honestly, avoiding the eve of holidays entirely saved my sanity. Plan around the crowd, not against it.
