Best timing to drive into JB via Woodlands to avoid the massive jam?
Planning a weekend drive to Johor. The causeway jam horror stories scare me. What timing actually works to minimise the wait, and any tips for the whole crossing process? Real experiences welcome.

Cross to JB almost monthly by car, so learned this the hard way. Timing is everything. AVOID Friday evening and Saturday morning going in, and Sunday evening coming back, those are the worst, easily 2-3 hours crawling. Best going in: very early morning, like before 6am on a weekday or Saturday, or late night after 10pm. Best coming back: mid-morning or early afternoon on a weekday, or very late night. Public holidays and school holidays, just multiply the misery, avoid if you can. Tips for the crossing: make sure you have enough petrol (SG law requires your tank at least three-quarter full when leaving, they do check), have your passport with at least six months validity, get the Malaysian digital arrival card sorted online before you go, and top up your Touch n Go card and Malaysian toll needs. Tudou/Waze both show live causeway conditions, check before you leave, sometimes Tuas Second Link is faster even if it is a longer drive. Keep small change and be patient at the counters. Off-peak, the whole thing can be 20 minutes; peak, it is a test of your soul. Plan your timing and it is very manageable.

Don't forget the three-quarter tank rule when leaving Singapore by car, they check and you can be fined if your tank is below. Fill up before you head to the checkpoint. Also VEP for your car is required now for driving in Malaysia, settle that beforehand or you risk penalties. Sort the admin so the trip is smooth.
If you are just going for the day and not carrying much, consider parking on the SG side and taking the bus or the shuttle across, sometimes it clears immigration faster than sitting in car queues, then Grab within JB. My friends who go for food do this. Depends whether you need the car in JB or just want to get across quickly.
Consider Tuas Second Link instead of Woodlands Causeway, it is often much less jammed even though the drive is longer, especially on peak days. Many regulars swear by Tuas for weekend trips. Check live traffic on Waze before deciding which crossing. Sometimes the extra distance saves you an hour of sitting in the causeway carpark.
