Cheap but memorable staycation ideas in Singapore that aren't overrated?

Budget is tight this year so overseas travel is out, but the family needs a break. Tired of the usual Sentosa hotel routine. Any underrated local experiences or staycations that felt genuinely refreshing without burning a hole in the wallet?

We did a Pulau Ubin day trip plus overnight at a nearby budget stay and the kids loved it more than any fancy hotel. Renting bikes on Ubin, seeing the kampong life and Chek Jawa wetlands felt like stepping back in time, and it's dirt cheap. Another gem is exploring the Southern Ridges walk from HortPark to Mount Faber, totally free and gorgeous at sunset. For a staycation, look out for hotel deals in the off-peak periods, sometimes city hotels drop prices a lot midweek. Honestly the refreshing part isn't the hotel, it's doing something different as a family. Ubin gave us that without spending much at all.

My underrated pick is Coney Island plus the Punggol waterway area, we cycled the whole stretch and packed our own food, spent almost nothing and the kids slept like logs that night from all the exercise. For an actual stay, we've done the chalets at places like Aloha Loyang or Downtown East during promo periods, way cheaper than hotels and great for families with a pool nearby. Also don't underestimate a simple museum hopping day, many have free entry for citizens. My take: refreshment comes from a change of routine, not luxury. Plan one hero activity and keep the rest relaxed. The kids remember the fun, not the price tag.
