My daughter just got her PSLE results, AL total is 12 (aggregate of her 6 subjects). We staying in the west, around Clementi. Under the new scoring system I'm quite lost on which schools are within reach and how the posting works now. Don't want to aim too high and waste choices, but also don't want to under-sell her. Parents who went through this recently, how did you strategise the school choices?

With AL 12 your daughter is in a solid range and has good options, but strategy matters under the new system. Remember posting is by school, and for schools where more students than places have the same score, they use citizenship then distance (within 1km, 1-2km, etc) then balloting as tie-breakers. So for popular schools near you, staying in Clementi actually helps because of the home-school distance priority. Look at each school's Indicative AL cut-off from the last exercise: aim your first 2-3 choices at schools whose cut-off is around AL 11-13, then put 'safer' AL 14-16 schools lower in your 6 choices as backup. That way you stretch for a good fit without risking an unwanted posting.

Don't just chase the 'brand name' school with the lowest AL number. AL 12 is a good score, but forcing her into the most competitive school where she'll be at the bottom of the cohort can crush her confidence. My son had similar score and we chose a decent school where he'd be comfortably in the middle-upper band, and he thrived, took leadership roles, and did better for O or the equivalent than if he'd struggled at a 'top' school. Fit, CCA strengths, and travel distance matter more than bragging rights.
