Chronic work stress, can't switch off at night. Anyone found something that works?

My mind races about work the moment I lie down and I'm sleeping maybe 4-5 hours. Coffee to survive the day, repeat. I don't want to be dramatic but it's been months. What actually helped you?

Please don't brush this off as being dramatic, months of 4 to 5 hours sleep with racing thoughts is your body waving a red flag. Been exactly there. What genuinely helped me, in order of impact: cutting caffeine after 2pm (the survival coffee was feeding the insomnia loop), and a hard "brain dump" ritual, before bed I write every worry and the next-day action on paper so my mind stops rehearsing them. I also set a real shutdown time for work, laptop closes at 7pm, notifications off, no exceptions. But the biggest thing was accepting I needed help beyond self-tricks. I saw my GP who took it seriously, and used the free/subsidised support here, the national mindline (1771) and my company EAP if you have one. If it's been months, talk to a professional, this is common and very treatable. You're not weak, you're running on empty.

The racing mind at night nearly broke me. Two things: a 20 min walk after work to physically decompress before going home, and putting the phone charging in the living room, not the bedroom. Doomscrolling in bed was making it a hundred times worse. Small changes but they compounded.

Check if your workload is actually humanly possible or if you've quietly absorbed two people's jobs. Sometimes the fix isn't meditation, it's a hard conversation with your boss about scope. I was gaslighting myself that I just needed to cope better when really the job was broken.

If your company has an EAP (employee assistance programme) it usually includes free confidential counselling sessions, most people never use it. I did and it helped me untangle the work anxiety. No shame in it lah, it's literally a benefit you're already paying for.
