Company cut variable bonus to 0.5 month, is negotiating pointless?

Just got my bonus letter, 0.5 month when last year was 2.5 and my performance rating is the same "exceeds". Manager blames "company performance". Is there any point pushing back or do I just eat it?

Push back, but do it smart. Variable bonus is discretionary so you can't demand it, but you CAN make your manager go to bat for you. I did this: booked a calm 1-on-1, didn't complain about the number, instead asked "help me understand how the pool was allocated given my exceeds rating, because I want to make sure I'm being calibrated fairly vs peers." That reframed it as a fairness question, not a tantrum. Turned out the cut was a blanket across the team regardless of rating, which is actually a red flag that ratings are meaningless there. In my case I got a small adjustment plus a commitment to a mid-year salary review. If they won't budge and top performers get the same as coasters, that's your signal to start looking, because staying means subsidising the underperformers.

Document the discrepancy between your rating and payout in writing, politely, via email after your chat. Not to threaten, but so there's a record. If you later interview elsewhere and they ask why you're leaving, you have a factual, non-emotional reason. Emotion loses, facts win in these conversations.

The "company performance" line is sometimes true and sometimes a cover. Check the facts: is the company actually doing badly, or did profit hold and they're just squeezing? If revenue is fine but bonus got slashed, that's a values signal. My old firm did that, paid execs fine but cut the rank and file. I left within the year and so did half my team.

Realistically once bonus letters are out the pool is already spent, so pushing this cycle rarely changes your number. What worked for me was pivoting the conversation to base salary increment instead, since that's recurring and compounds. Got a 6% bump on base which over time beats a one-off bonus argument. Aim there.
