Do I need to register with ACRA for my small side hustle?

Selling handmade stuff on Carousell and Instagram, making maybe a few hundred a month. Do I legally need to register a business with ACRA? And do I need to declare this income? Dont want to get into trouble.

Registered mine once it got serious, here's what I learned. Two separate things people confuse: 1) ACRA business registration, generally required if you're carrying on a business (using a business name, ongoing trade for profit), even small. There's a hobby-vs-business line, occasional selling of personal items isn't a business, but regular selling of handmade goods for profit leans toward 'business'. Registration is cheap and gives you a proper business name + ability to open a business bank account. 2) Income tax, you must declare business/trade income to IRAS regardless of whether you registered, and you can deduct genuine business expenses. GST is a separate threshold thing you only worry about at higher revenue. For a few hundred/month you're small, but declaring income is the safe move. Please verify the current registration criteria and tax rules directly on the ACRA and IRAS sites, don't rely on forum takes for compliance.

The income declaration is the part people conveniently forget, and it's the one that actually matters for staying out of trouble, IRAS wants you to declare trade income even if you never registered a business with ACRA, they're separate obligations. Registration is about the business identity, declaration is about tax, and the tax duty applies regardless. So the practical safe move is to keep simple records of your sales and your costs (materials, postage, packaging) from day one, in a basic spreadsheet, because if your side hustle grows it's a nightmare to reconstruct later, and those costs are deductible against the income anyway. At a few hundred a month you're small, but build the habit now. Confirm the specifics of what and how to declare directly with IRAS, since it's a compliance matter I wouldn't guess on.

I registered a sole proprietorship on ACRA and it was genuinely quick and cheap online with Singpass, done in one sitting for a small annual fee, so the barrier is low if you decide you need to. What it got me was a proper registered business name (useful for looking legit to customers) and, importantly, the ability to open a business bank account, which meant my personal money and my side-hustle money stopped getting tangled together. That separation alone was worth it, because come tax time, or just for knowing whether you're actually making a profit, having the sales and expenses in their own account instead of mixed with your grocery spending is a huge headache saver. Even at your small scale, that clean-books benefit is a real reason to consider registering.

The rough dividing line is this, from how it was explained to me: occasional selling of your own personal stuff, clearing out your wardrobe, one-off sales, is generally not a 'business', but regular, ongoing selling of goods you make specifically to sell for profit, under a shop name, leans toward being a business that should be registered. My own trigger point was when mine went from 'sell something whenever I felt like it' to 'every week, with a brand name and repeat customers', that's when I registered, because at that stage it was clearly a trade, not a hobby. You're making a few hundred monthly and selling handmade goods regularly, so you're arguably near that line. Verify the current ACRA guidance yourself since it's a compliance question and the criteria are spelled out officially.
