What are the hard lessons of starting a side hustle while holding a full-time job here?

I want to start something on the side, maybe an e-commerce or a small service business, but keep my day job for stability. For those who've done it, what are the real pitfalls beyond just being tired?

I ran a small home-based baking business alongside my 9-to-6 for two years, and the hard lessons weren't what I expected. First, check your employment contract for a moonlighting or conflict-of-interest clause, mine had one and I had to declare it to HR to be safe. Second, the admin will eat you alive, once you start earning you need to track it for IRAS because side income is taxable, and I nearly got caught out not setting aside money for the tax bill. Third and most brutal, the side hustle is easy when it's a hobby and hard the moment it becomes an obligation with paying customers who complain, that's when 70% of people quit. The ones who make it treat it like a real business from day one, separate bank account, proper costing, and they don't quit the day job until the side income is consistently covering their expenses.

The tiredness is real but the sneakier trap is your day-job performance quietly slipping because your brain is always half on the side gig. My appraisal dipped the year I was distracted, and the stable income was the whole reason I kept the job. Protect the golden goose while it's still your main income.

Cheeky but real, most side hustles are just expensive hobbies that lose money for the first year, and that's fine if you know it going in. The Instagram gurus selling you the dropshipping dream conveniently skip that part. Go in expecting to lose money before you make any.

Undercharging nearly killed my side business. I was so grateful for any customer that I priced too low and ended up working for basically nothing after costs. Price for profit from the start, or you're just buying yourself a stressful second job.

Register properly once you're serious, a sole proprietorship with ACRA is cheap and it separates your business from your personal liability and finances. Doing everything under your personal name gets messy fast when it grows. Sort the boring structure early.
