So because you earn more, you'd put in a bigger share of the joint pot, but you both retain personal money you don't have to justify to each other. This kills the two biggest resentment sources: the lower earner feeling they can't keep up on 50/50, and both feeling policed on personal spending. Concrete steps: 1) List all shared fixed costs monthly. 2) Decide contribution split (we do it by income %, e.g. if you earn 60% of household income you fund 60% of the joint account). 3) Whatever's left in each personal account is yours, no questions. 4) Agree a threshold above which any big purchase needs a joint discussion (we use $500). Revisit yearly as incomes change. Full combining works for some but proportional-joint-plus-personal is the most resentment-proof I've seen.
